Oh, it did my heart good to see that little brown horse at 50-1 win the Kentucky Derby this afternoon. Hooray for Mine That Bird! So inspiring to all of us underdogs (to mix a metaphor).
Here's the call of the race.

A spunky little horse - I think I heard that it was particularly good on the muddy track compared to the other horses.
I didn't see the race - I'm going to check out the link you listed.
Strange name ...
I didn't see the race either but that's one fantastic win!!!
I usually root for the underdog too.
It was such a surprise that the announcer mis-identified him as "Pioneer of the Nile" as he burst out into the lead and you can hear the amazement in his voice as he realizes who it was that won! Priceless.
Love it when the underdog wins :)
I've seen a couple of reruns of the race - what an astounding finish! You wouldn't think it was possible. That little horse seemed to be gaining speed even at the end! I wonder if the astonishment in all the other jockeys somehow transfered to their horses and they slowed their pace by a micro-second to make Bird's finish even more spectacular.
That's possible, B. And the other horses might have gotten sick of the mud by then and the Bird didn't mind it. The time was not particularly fast.
I just watched the race on video...oh how thrilling!! Reminded me of Seabiscuit's story (a good book)... and who the heck is this little scrappy gelding showing up?!
The way the jockey cut him in the inner rail, than gave him his head to blow the doors off...HooHa!!
My mom really enjoyed the exultance of Calvin Borel. He was sooo beside himself, and everyone there obviously is very fond of him. They all were congratulating him as he rode around the track.
He won The Oaks the day before as well on the favorite horse and he kissed her nose afterward. Cute.
Maria
(In case everybody doesn't know it, Lana (Maria) lives in Louisville where the Derby takes place.)
Yes, I thought he would go on whooping forever. The crowd loved it and he was doing high fives with every employee who walked by. Great stuff.
