The goose family on the roof--no trace of them. My theory: they were picked off by crows or an owl at night and the parents left.
The water is a part of Setauket Harbor which leads out to LI Sound which is salt water. This exact spot was made famous by our local painter William Sidney Mount. If you do a Google Image search under Eel Spearing at Setauket you will see the same spot that I photographed, only a closer view. This great painting was done in 1845.
Priscilla - I just went over to see a copy of the painting. Were you specifically looking for the same view? There are a lot more trees on that slope now.
At a lovely little park nearby I once watched a swan scare the bejeebers out of a little girl & her even littler brother. Unfortunately I was across the pond from them so couldn't come to their aid.
They had gone to the water's edge to feed the ducks & the swan took umbrage to their presence. He/she charged up to them & proceeded to beat them about the head & ears with it's wings. It was truly an impressive display of swan ferocity!

How nice :)
Did you ever find any clue as to what happened to the geese on the roof?
What a beautiful, peaceful pond. Is it fresh water?

Swans are awesome, I wish we had more here, funny I only see them in bigger cities, is that where they would rather be?
I don't know about swans in cities. Last fall I counted over 100 of them in this harbor one day. Must have been having a convention.
The trees have been allowed to grow there as it is now residential. In Mount's day it was farmland or pasture.

I can believe it. Swans can be very agressive and on land they tower over toddlers. Must have been frightening for those kids.
