Mallard hybrid

A tight-knit little duck family at Stony Brook Harbor showing that mallards and barnyard ducks can interbreed. They were very tame, almost as if they were used to being given handouts. Wonder how long the young one will stick around.

The mallard and the white duck produced that multi colored one?? Weird

Yep. They were feeding close together while I took a dozen pictures. There were no other ducks around. Finally a swan sailed across the harbor, walked out of the water, and hissed at me as if to say "That's enough now. Go away." So I did.

When I looked at your first photo, I almost blinked in disbelief.
I have a photo on my blog on April 19th with three ducks with similar markings!

Amazing.

Hi Marylou,
I visited your blog and saw your Odd Duck Family. Very pretty. Maybe it's a fad among ducks.

I'm going to revisit the place every few days and see if they are still there.

This is too cool to know. Near my parent's house in GA is a pond with a mallard and domestic white duck. The female lays a clutch of eggs each year, but no little ones are produced. I haven't figured out yet if turtles, snakes, gators, or a combo of all get them before they mature.

I'm guessing the egg-eaters you mentioned do get the eggs. Hope the ducks don't stop trying.

I've been checking every few days but so far no further sighting of these ducks--or any other mallards, for that matter. Perhaps they were just passing through. But we do have 3 or 4 barnyard ducks at the SB Duck Pond just down the street. People release them there.
