I visited Harriet and Sam the other day

Mark Twain's house in Hartford, CT.
It's described as Picturesque Gothic.
I especially liked the 3rd floor billiard room
where Sam did his writing;
you could still smell the cigars
more than a hundred years later
Click here and scroll down for pictures
of three of the rooms
 Decorative brickwork approaching front door
 Mark Twain's front porch
 A view of the conservatory
 The Gillette House is nearby
 And next door is neighbor
 Harriet Beecher Stowe's house
The back of the Stowe house.
They had seven children and it wasn't a roomy house.
No picture taking allowed inside either house, alas.

I just love those places. Especially from an architectural stand point, they are wonderfully perserved examples of their respective eras and class levels. Thank goodness for people willing to work on funding and volunteer their time for the preservation of such treasures.
It's also nice to have a peek at what the author's lives were like, what little excentricities (sp?) they had, etc.

hey you were in our neighborhood!?? I went there a few years ago for work party at the building in the back, we got a tour too, when I was a kid I went there for a field trip too. Nice old houses eh? Did you get to go upstairs? I was late and they stopped letting people up there at the last walk through group.

I agree wholeheartedly, M. These places are so important as America changes and we lose a sense of where we came from.
HBS wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852, so by the time she took up residence here in 1873 she was a very famous lady. She also spent much time in Florida. The house is full of her floral paintings, quite good.
The guides were very knowledgeable. If I repeated all that they said in every room it would be a long, long post! so I decided just to put up pictures. There are websites for both houses and I think you can see pictures of some of the rooms. Lots of chotchkies.
The Twain house was furnished and maintained by Olivia so the only place where I got a sense of Sam's personality was the billiard room.
I'm glad they haven't put elevators in these houses even though the stairs were hard to take because we weren't allowed to sit down anywhere and the tour was more than an hour in each!
The other half of the day we spent at the Wadsworth Atheneum, also in Hartford. I'll put up a few pix of that.

The Stowe house seems a lot roomier than mine where seven children recently rented. I love the Twain house. Ah. Picturesque gothic, a favorite style.
