Wadsworth Atheneum

Last Saturday the nine o'clock ferry to Bridgeport then a bus ride of 45 minutes brought us to the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, a wonderful little museum with a great collection. The exhibit Monet's Water Lilies was still on and we enjoyed a docent-led tour. One large canvas was on loan from MOMA and as you sat there and looked it seemed to change slightly. Later I looked at the rest of the collection and especially enjoyed the Hudson River School paintings (Cole, Church, Bierstadt, et al.).

The first pic above is the remarkable mural you see as you enter the building. No picture taking was allowed in the galleries, but you can see much of their collection online on the website. Well worth a visit!

You're spending a lot of time in CT lately and I have been in NY!

The Wadsworth, Twain and Stowe houses were all on the same day. The trip was arranged by the PJ Ferry Company. Our bus was late getting back to Bridgeport and they held the ferry for us! Ta-dah!

Lots of interesting stuff in NY state, too. Did you cross over into Canada?

no to Canada, I didn't have my passport, nor did any one else. I was right there near the bridge though.

What a wonderful excursion. To see Monet's waterlilies, ah, and the Hudson School paintings would be lovely to see.

Only a representative few of the water lily paintings were in this show, Lana. As you know, Monet painted his water garden obsessively during the last years of his life; most of the paintings are elsewhere.

It was a nice excursion and not too expensive--seventy-five dollars for everything (2 ferry rides, 2 bus rides, 3 museums).
