The Old Casino, Asbury Park

My photo of the Old Casino. It was standing all by itself
in a cleared area. To the right a footbridge takes you
over the river to Ocean Grove.

A better balanced picture of the Old Casino.

The dome of the Old Casino. Picture from the Internet.
At least they are preserving this structure.
And here's how it used to look:
We drove around but I didn't take any other pictures in Asbury Park. It was too depressing. Mary pointed out the Stone Pony, made famous by Bruce Springsteen ... underwhelming.

What a shame to loose that fantasy-like old ginger bread! You would think that it could have been declared some kind of historical site and more of the complex saved. I guess the members of the gambling town were more interested in fast times and easy money than old buildings ..... Did you get any pictures of any of the old houses? Years ago, before I moved to TX, I lived on the mainland near the main road into Atlantic City - this was in the early 70's - I fell in love with a beautiful queen of a home in A.C. but was talked out of buying it - even then the city was losing its elegance and turning into ghettos.

oops! I just caught a typo - read "lose" for "loose" (please)

Biddie, the Casino IS being saved. One of the few old buildings to be in the process of restoration.
What was turning into ghettos, Atlantic City or Asbury Park?

What a beautiful building!

The old house that I liked was located on the north side of the island, away from the tourist area in Atlantic City.

You know, the more I look at the pictures of the old casino the more I seem to remember a building like that with a merry-go-round inside. Could it be that 50+ years ago that building did have a merry-go-round in it?

That's quite a coincidence - I had the same feeling ... could we have gone to some park with the youth fellowship group that had a merry-go-round in an elaborate building like that?

I don't remember going on a trip with the youth fellowship but I guess it's possible. My parents took us to Asbury Park 3 or 4 times when I was quite young. I think the last time was when I was 12 or maybe as old as 14. All before the gambling took over the place.

I remember going to some amusement park with the youth fellowship but can't remember which - it had to have been within a reasonable traveling distance from the church.

Maybe I saw the fancy merry-go-round in a movie ....

Biddie,
I remember going to Palisades (sp?) Park once and that wasn't all that far away. I don't remember what group I went with but it wasn't my family.

Kristen,
Could be John Bingham or John le Carre.

Here's the Amazon entry for Rimington's "Illegal Action". I think it's new.
