Where the swallows nest

The Hercules pavilion in old Stony Brook

The four corners where the roof meets the white horizontal beams or headers are the places where swallows always nest. The structure was built to shelter the Hercules figurehead from the ship USS Ohio.

Hi - when I first looked at the pictures, I thought what a strange isolated little display and I wondered if anyone ever went there ....

But after I read the article, there is so much history there!!! The figure was carved out of a SINGLE CEDAR TREE!!!! You would have to really hunt for a cedar that size these days....

I'm surprised that the two items are exposed to the elements like that - especially the old boat. The cedar is better able to handle the elements.

The pavilion sure makes a great place for the swallows!

You are such a careful reader! I'm amazed you have time.

How are your cats? I miss seeing them.

The cats are doing fine. I didn't realize how much Sylvestor's energetic hi-jenks were causing problems for the rest of my "official" cats. Now that he is gone, the 4 remaining cats hang around the front yard a lot more.

Also, I have 2 feral cats that have adopted me. Bandit (the one that bit me so bad a couple of months ago) and his buddy, Cindy Lou, stay on the back deck during the cool part of the day and at night but disappear into the forest during the day. Bandit has been neutered but Cindy Lou is still too leery of me to even be touched.

The 2 bands of cats keep away from each other - I expect there to be some complicated territorial issues in the future. Bandit has started to insist upon being allowed into the house ......

Unfortunately, with so many cats around, sooner or later (cats being rather a non-social species), one of my official cats will decide to move on to a less populated area - most likely Maggie ....

Well, I miss your visits and comments also ....
