The college where I work has just received a 5 million dollar gift from an anonymous donor. Everyone is wondering just WHOOOO it was. We may never know.

Thanks to you, kind donor! This will help a lot of students.

Here's the story.

This may have been the same model

1909 Baker Electric Coupe
Owned by some guy in television.
This may have been the same kind of car my father drove in India way back when (see post from a few days ago)
The article was in the NY times of August 5, 2007.

This time last year ...

I went on a HIKE and it was sooo cold we nearly froze.

But it was fun.

Enjoy some pictures of our north shore of Long Island Sound!

I'm in a couple of them...black coat, tan pants, white shoes.

Epops (In the thicket, singing)

"Epopopoi popoi popopopoi popoi, here, here, quick, quick, quick, my comrades in the air; all you who pillage the fertile lands of the husbandmen, the numberless tribes who gather and devour the barley seeds, the swift flying race that sings so sweetly. And you whose gentle twitter resounds through the fields with the little cry of tiotiotiotiotiotiotiotio; and you who hop about the branches of the ivy in the gardens; the mountain birds, who feed on the wild olive-berries or the arbutus, hurry to come at my call, trioto, trioto, totobrix; you also, who snap up the sharp-stinging gnats in the marshy vales, and you who dwell in the fine plain of Marathon, all damp with dew, and you, the francolin with speckled wings; you too, the halcyons, who flit over the swelling waves of the sea, come hither to hear the tidings; let all the tribes of long-necked birds assemble here; know that a clever old man has come to us, bringing an entirely new idea and proposing great reforms. Let all come to the debate here, here, here, here. Torotorotorotorotix, kikkabau, kikkabau, torotorotorolililix."
Aristophanes, The Birds
(Tr. by Eugene O'Neill, Jr.)

If I Don't Post Anything for a Few Days ...

Guess which one is the author of this blog?

Last fall I spent some time guiding volunteers in their hammer swinging for Habitat for Humanity. The house is almost finished; it's at the interior painting stage. Fun!

The Pink-Footed Goose Made Me Do It!

Well, here I am, landed safely in Blogland with nary a feather out of place. Thanks to all those who suggested the flight! Now here is a picture of the rare bird that impelled me to take this step into the visual delights of the Blogosphere.

The pink-footed goose was sighted from November on at Montauk, and then recently a second individual was sighted right in my own backyard, at the Stony Brook Mill Pond. Yesterday (Yay!) I was lucky enough to see it with my own eyes just before dusk. It was with a huge group of Canada Geese at the southern end of the mill pond. (Thanks to the nice guy who let me look through his scope.) This is the Montauk individual. Maybe I can get a picture of our Stony Brook goose.
