Elements is a simplified version of Photo Shop. The instructor the other day seemed to turn up her nose at it, but it worked for me today and it's on the public library terminals, so I'll use it.

Cropping a picture gives some interesting new views. I copied your picture and played with cropping out more and more, leaving just a few blooms in the center. I guess, basically, what you crop out depends on a combination of factors - the size that you need, the part that you want to emphasize, isolating a certain pattern, removing unwanted elements - I've always enjoyed playing with this tool.
Have you played with the brightness/contrast/gamma settings yet? This tool and the focus tool have rescued me many a time despite my poor little camera and my rough skills with it.

Yes, I agree with your comments on cropping. They are really artistic decisions we make. I guess here I was trying to show a specimen in all its glory (the view out my bedroom window). A single branch would be an artwork in itself. I am so new to playing with photos...it seems miraculous to me what you can do with images. I now see how a certain person could put red eyes into a picture of Kristen. Oh, there is so much mischief one could do. No wonder he doesn't post a picture of himself.
Haven't played with brightness yet; hope to get to all that eventually.

Congrats on your cropping job, good work! It really can make a picture, don't you think? I have a backlog of photos awaiting "processing", unfortunately I don't have the software yet on this new computer. I even got a shot of a lightning bolt from our wild storm last night, I can't wait to see how it turned out, it's hard to tell just on the camera's display. I love the whole digital camera thing, it's so fascinating to see what you can capture isn't it?
