The Pink-Footed Goose Made Me Do It!

Well, here I am, landed safely in Blogland with nary a feather out of place. Thanks to all those who suggested the flight! Now here is a picture of the rare bird that impelled me to take this step into the visual delights of the Blogosphere.

The pink-footed goose was sighted from November on at Montauk, and then recently a second individual was sighted right in my own backyard, at the Stony Brook Mill Pond. Yesterday (Yay!) I was lucky enough to see it with my own eyes just before dusk. It was with a huge group of Canada Geese at the southern end of the mill pond. (Thanks to the nice guy who let me look through his scope.) This is the Montauk individual. Maybe I can get a picture of our Stony Brook goose.

P.S. This is fun - I'm so glad that you decided to "blog" - you have such an interesting view on life - it's fun to visit with you!

Priscilla, welcome to the blogging world! I'm so glad you joined in...although I envy your muse the pink footed goose~I feel mine may not carry the same cache...ahem..allow me to introduce...Homer the blue footed booby...lol. I couldn't resist! Anyway, I rarely check my email so Mom alerted me to your blog, and I'm honored that you would include me. I had a terrible day, and this helped make it better. It's so good for my soul to meet someone that loves to play with words.

Already flubbed it...cachet...not cache..I guess I need to come out of these woods more often...:P

Welcome, welcome all!!
This is fun. I'm still learning all the bells and whistles, for instance I just wrote a post here and it disappeared; don't know why.
Cheryl, your Homer the blue-footed booby is a riot...is the picture on your blog?
The title "Winged Words" refers to 2 things: my interest in birds, and my interest in Classical language and literature. Homer (not your mascot) is always talking about "winged words" in the Iliad and the Odyssey and no one is sure what that means exactly.
"Cache" is good, a play on catch, which is what we try to do with rare birds telephotographically.
I'm going to be asking you guys a lot of questions about blogging, so be prepared! For instance, do I need those 3 lines (Open ID, etc.) below?

Hi Priscilla,

I found your blog! Looking good, and I do love to see the birds. Writing sometimes disappears on all of us, it is most frustrating when it is an unusually long one!
Glad to see you!!

Good morning. Those 3 lines are new, but I believe if you go to your dashboard, click "settings", then "comments", then under "who can comment" select "users with google accounts" ~ that should take them off. I think it just opens up your blog to more people, not just the ones that have blogs/accounts set up. I don't have mine set to that to lessen the possibility of spammers & trolls (often will use "anonymous").

Good Morning!! I checked in my copy of Sibley's Bird Guide -- boo hoo! The pink-footed goose wasn't listed. (It just dawned on me that Sibley's is pretty much a North American reference book ....)

So I went to the supra-Sibley reference - the internet! Found several references to it. This bird is a world traveler, for sure!

Found: The Pink-footed Goose ( Anser brachyrhynchus ) is a goose which breeds in eastern Greenland , Iceland and Svalbard . It is migratory , wintering in northwest Europe, especially S/E Scotland, with smaller numbers in N/W England ....

Always love learning something about our ol' world ....

I saw the extra buttons at the bottom of your comments page and wondered also what they were .... Cheryl's research spurred me on to try to figure out what it was all about.

This is a link to a help screen on Blogger that explains what it is all about:

I also saw how to get rid of the "word verification" stuff if you want to. Again on the comments page, there is a yes/no setting for word verification.

Hello! Thank you, Biddie, for posting the facts on our "vagrant"(not my word). I saw it again yesterday, and much closer this time. So exciting! I showed it to 3 birders who were going by and they began to chortle with glee.It was cruising up and down before a small island and seemed to be showing off for us! Next payday I must get a digital camera; I can't go on robbing the internet for images indefinitely.
Cheryl and Biddie, thank you for the leads to info on blog settings. The advantage in keeping that word verification setting is that it prevents automated spammers.
Hi, Herb! You're welcome. Any time.
