Who blew my cover?!

Rats!!
I thought I could hide out up in that big oak tree beside the Mill Pond and no one would bother me. I squeezed into a cormorant's nest, which is pretty declasse, let me tell you.
But now all these people keep gathering below and pointing their cameras up at me and I'm so flustered I can't even concentrate on laying my eggs. I wish they'd go away!
Humph!!
Humans are crazy!! No wonder the pink-footed goose left town.

((chuckle)) I love owls! There's a colony or family or group or something of at least 4 of them here. I can hear them talking back and forth at dusk - sometimes they get into some kind of "squawk-off" and really put out some noise!! I've spotted them here in the yard - they are the large great horned owls and could easily catch my cats so I bring all my cats in towards dark (much to the cat's annoyance!!). I think that they were responsible for getting all 7 of my neighbor's cats (except for one old one that seemed to be smart enough to hide at night). But after my cats are all safely inside, I enjoy sitting out on the porch listening to them.

My mom has a white and a brown owl living in her yard too, I have not seen it yet, just waiting to get a picture of it!!

I saw the great horned owl--this is a picture from the internet--two days ago, and I was standing in the exact same spot as when I saw the pink-footed goose, which I thought was remarkable. I'm wondering if they brought in a bird from a preserve and released it here; it was so tame. Now I hope people don't start losing cats! I'd never seen a GH owl so close before. It was right in the midst of a cormorant colony. That is my least favorite bird. They grunt like pigs.

Good Morning to ya!!

There was a huge flock of cormorants that stayed around the Galveston ferry landings all the time. It was interesting to watch them dive when the ferries stirred up schools of fish. Then they would all perch on the huge pilings that guided the ferries into the landings to hold out their wings until they dried. The ferries made so much noise that I never heard the birds make any noise. But I sure could hear all the seagulls - what squawkers they are. The seagulls would ride back and forth with the ferries - literally! Some would always perch on the upper ferry for the ride! Others would glide on the air streams that the ferries created - it was fun to see a gull gliding right along the side of the ferry about 3-4 feet above your head. I loved it!

When my daughter was a little girl I told her that the Screech Owl's call was "Boogety boogety boo!"...it was so cute to hear her calling that out to the woods to get a Screechie to talk back to her.

Neat memories, Biddie and Cheryl. Birds are so much a part of our lives, and it's amazing so many species are still around, what with all the pollution and habitat destruction.
