My car's sun visor has gone on strike. Something inside has popped...a spring?... and the darn thing won't stay in the up position., just flops freely. They tell me a new one would be amazingly expensive. Does anyone have any ideas for a solution? Those black marks are bits of velcro I stuck there, but that didn't work (glue too gooey; doesn't hold for more than 10 seconds.)
This is how it should look...and does for 10 seconds.

Duct Tape?? No really would you be able to use a smaller bungee cord from one side to the other?
I have to laugh...the first thing that popped into my mind...duct tape..the universal antidote to all the world's ills...not to pretty but gets the job done :)
Depending a little on the age of the vehicle you might try an auto salvage yard for a replacement. It looks like it's 2 or 3 screws that hold it on so it should be easy and not near as expensive as a new one.
Just a thought.
Great minds think a like!!!
While we're being free-form creative (and trying to keep from messing up your nice car) ...
How about sets of magnets afixed to either of the two surfaces with Gorilla glue -or stitched into place on either surface with a curved upholstery needle?
Or find a set of matching visors at a salvage yard, like already suggested. Get both the left and right side visors - take apart the right side to see how it works, then use the left one for repairs in case the spring(s) are unique for each side ....
Alternately - sew a large button to the ceiling and sew a "loop" to the bottom of the visor so that you can easily loop the thing up over the button ....
Oh the button is a good idea..
Oh, what a lot of good ideas! Thank you, one and all. Duct tape might be the simplest. Although the roof is a fuzzy cloth the velcro did stick to that. The visor is vinyl and slippery. I like that button idea too. I've been puzzling over this problem for about 5 months. At first I took a plastic hanger thing that a garment came on and and propped it up with that using the middle bar for the hook part. That worked but was unsightly. Then I thought of velcro and threw away the plastic thing, but the velcro didn't work. Then I jammed a pencil under the hinge part which worked for 30 seconds. There should be some way to tie it to the good one. Oh well. Highest marks to Biddie for multiple solutions.
Mom did come up with some great solutions. That right sided, analytical brain of hers leaves me in the dust when it comes to unique yet practical solutions to problems.
I did not get that gene from her...hence my reliance upon duct tape.
:)
Hi Guys .... Thanks for the kudos but I had to laugh - duct tape is one of my favorite remedies! You have to go over to my blog to see one of my many uses ...
Well y'all, I went and bought some duct tape. I secured the visor to the roof. How nice! Useful stuff. Fixed the vacuum cleaner hose too. Next day visor had flopped down again. Used more tape. Let's see how long that holds...
(( laughing )) Three cheers for the duct tape .....
It holds for about 18 hours now but then pulls away from the fuzzy ceiling. I just stick it back up. Coming to work a little while ago I got caught in a traffic jam with the strong sun high overhead and the visor stuck UP. I roasted for 20 minutes. Ya can't win!
(( chuckle )) Oh, no!!!! Did the visor stick from the duct tape glue heating up -or- the spring in the hinge sticking?
The duct tape was holding it UP and I didn't want to tear it down to shield me,even though I knew it would fall down eventually (but not at the right time)
Are you pulling my leg, Biddie?
(( laughing )) No, it was an honest question - albeit, maybe a dumb question .....
